1st Annual NoVa Pagan Pride Day
wow..all i can say is just..wow
i went to the 1st annual pagan pride day held here in NoVa, sponsored by the Open Hearth Foundation..
ok, not ALL that freakin' wow..but wow enough for me for today
aside from my circle of sisters (a twisted group that!)..and samantha who owns our local witch shop, the pagans i've met have been..hmm, how shall i put this?..just as bigoted as the rest of america
and a majority of those at this festival were the same..except for my spammer, shea who is the chair of the OHF, the nice lady who's name i can't remember but want to say is patricia, the friendly man who was running the greeting table, the cool chick from the bookseller booth and the really nice guy newly moved from buffalo who sat down and talked with us..now THEY were nice, friendly, non-freaked out white pagans who made me feel COMPLETELY at home..kudos to samantha for validating my feeling that she was a genuine person by greeting me and chatting for a bit while she was working her table (i'm really, really bad at names but good at faces, forgive me)
NO KUDOS to those 2 other people of color there who were less than friendly..fuck off..how many OF us can there be (outside my own circle) that are black AND pagan?..your behavior was AS BAD as our own black community is towards each other..they were so happy to be accepted however marginally by whitey they made my ass itch..i hate that about some of us, but i digress..
so anyway
the festival was small, but it was the first here..and like i told shea and patricia this was a sleeping giant..they had over 100 visitors BEFORE noon..they've said if they get 200 at one of the larger events in DC or baltimore they're happy..and the people kepts rolling in..even the muggles that were just at the park for the day wandered in and over..MOST EXCELLENT public relations to see that we pagans are NOT whatever they may THINK we are..
hugs and kisses to gretchen for joining me..the rest of our circle was - otherwise occupied..had a nice time..had some really, really good convo..may have gotten sucked into helping out - but it's good, i volunteered, it's worthwhile
ahhh..lesson learned that regardless of one's spiritual openness, one can't always escape one's cultural/familial teachings..don't care really, it's a part of life and the few gems i met today help me keep the faith in humankind
